TOPIC: Moving In (Tartarus)

Re: Moving In (Tartarus) 3 years 2 months ago #1457

"Now that may not be such a bad thing. It may be best for you not to know the details, but if manny were to be charged with murder, why, that would make Sweet Pea a person of interest. And, more importantly, your doctor would be harboring a fugitive, is that not so?  Seems to me that could be a real nice opportunity for a good old fashioned raid, and, if I'm the course of the trial, Manny is found to be innocent due to extenuating circumstances, well that doesn't discount the charges against the doctor, especially any that might have been laid on him during the course of the arrest."

An odd, feverish glint enters the Scholars eye.

"We can make this work for us, Agent Styx, and if the doctor there is smart, that little girl may just come out of this alright after all."

John shakes his head ruefully. "Won't work. The whole damn thing happened in Waypoint and not here in my formal jurisdiction, she's not a Tartarus citizen and neither her parents, Manny's not been formally charged with anything by anyone yet to appeal to the Council to warrant disturbing a man's rest and rights, and if all that weren't enough..." He met the scholar's eyes with a questioning and somewhat critical edge to his stance and body language that comes from years of being in law enforcement. "By that logic, not only would I need to bring in the Doc, but I'd have to take a hard look at any and all the accomplices involved in the incident itself."

John relaxed slightly and took another drag of smoke. "If what you say is true and Manny killed someone innocent then I can take it to the council to open a case, but it's damn thin. Unless you have something more to go on to bring me, who knows what will become of her and Manny." He paced slowly and chuckled, "Of course someone could just go looking for them and see."

"That was where I was hoping the extenuating circumstances, such as his coming to the aid of a helpless child, would come into play, but I understand your position."

The Scholar resumes his pacing, lost in thought.

"Would that someone be able to count on aid, or at least a lack of interference from the local constabulary? If what you say about the Doc is true and the girl is already a lost cause, then a few concerned citizens following her trail should be purely a civil issue, yes? After all, it may be hard to determine just whose jurisdiction all of this falls under. And if after he dust settles, a few known criminals are apprehended and delivered to the proper authorities, well that's just a coincidence."

John watches the scholar pace feeling uneasy. He sighed and scrubbed his beard saying, "It's a complicated issue to pursue legally, and I appreciate your gravity sir.  Tread lightly. Sour reputations are not an incrimination of guilt under the law, and by your word the girl went there of her own free will. Free will is a big deal round these parts, and if she was foolish enough to offer herself up... then there is no crime no matter how ruthless the outcome." He dropped his cigarette butt, and crushed it out with the toe of his boot with a sympathetic but dispassionate tone.

"If you and your friends are bitten by guilt over this, I understand. If you wish to make your own inquires after the girl and her safety, then I am not going to stop you. But, mind you... you are in a very different place here than Waypoint, and you are outsiders here meddling with citizens of Tartarus who the Ferrymen are bound to serve and protect regardless of how unsympathetic. Mind your steps, or you'll find yourself in the very snare you suppose to slip round the other."

"I will take that under advisement, and will do my best to steer clear of any illicit activities while in your jurisdiction. I will also try to skirt this doctors domain entirely, but that me be troublesome as I don't know to where it extends."

The scholar gathers his possessions and nods respectfully, not quite departing yet.

John nods slowly narrowing his eyes. "The Doc's place is in Asphodel. Shouldn't be too hard to find or steer clear of if that's what you mean. Pretty quiet town really. Mainly a lot of simple folks just trying to get by." John offered his hand to shake before the scholar leaves. "Best of luck to ya'."

Rollo shakes the proffered hand warmly.

"I appreciate your time, Agent, and I hope next we meet, there will be good news, or perhaps a few jobs that need doing. Take care."

The scholar leaves the station, taking his time on the way back to the Gate. With a cigar slowly burning, he makes a few notes in the leather bound journal before keying in the code to return him to Waypoint, dragging his trunk through after him. As he vanishes through the portal, all that is left behind is a puff of pungent smoke, and the hope of a little girls safety.
