TOPIC: Moving In (Tartarus)

2 years 9 months ago #1608

The dark and dusty uniformity of Tartarus is broken by the latest appearance through the portal. The mad clashing of colors is somehow pulled together into a sensible and cohesive whole, apparently only through the comfort of their bearer. After losing a bit of his lunch into a nearby hedge, Rollo straightens and mentally consults his directions, then takes off for the address he was given.

A blur of color and motion in the far more sedate world of undeath, he still seems oddly at home, radiating near invulnerability, a naiveté that no one could possibly Want to harm him, and thus nothing bad could possibly happen.

Finally arriving at his destination, as far as he could tell, he enters the office of the Department of Necromantic Recovery and heads straight to the bored looking clerk at the front desk.

"The Scholar known as Rollo to see Agent Styx, regarding one Manfred Pieces and company, if you would?"

The ashen face of the feminine form seated at the clerk's desk slowly rolls up to him with the soft unnatural sound of old and stiffened vertebrae popping with a sickening wobble of prolonged disuse, and her hair tied up in a tight bun as empty eye sockets come to meet his gaze. "Hello dearie." she replied with a genuine sweetness. "Welcome to Pottersfield Station. Agent Styx just arrived back a few moments ago. I'll send word that you are waiting. Please, make your self comfortable and help yourself to some of the coffee and shortbreads in the waiting area." The then pulled out a quill and well and scrawled something in a red ink upon a ledger book and spoke to seemingly one for a moment.

Rollo bows to the waist, spilling a few items from his travel bag in so doing. He is quick to scoop them back up and examine the proffered snacks.

"Most appreciated, gracious lady. I will await his pleasure."

He eyes the food and drink suspiciously, but still takes a cup and a bite and seats himself.  Cup rested on his knee, he pulls a blackish leather volume from his satchel, and unlocks it. Pen in one hand, book in the other, he begins to make an entry.

"Well sir, we kind of dropped the situation with Manny and Sweet Pea into your lap, and I don't feel quite right about that. Neither of them is prepared to live alone, and they don't have the skills to live together."

He sets the journal down carefully and takes a tentative drink of the coffee. With only the mildest of winces, he continues.

"I would like to help them gain those skills. I am here to move them into their new home and hopefully show them how to take care of each other, so they can both become productive members of your society here."

There is a long wait in the lobby. People come and go past Rollo. Eventually the door to the back of the station opens and John walks out in his shirt and vest, and sans his coat and hat. He extends a hand out to Rollo and smiles. "Mornin,' heard you came to talk about Manny. Sorry for the delay, Had to do some paperwork on that nuisance in Lamneth we are workin' on getting taken care of. So, what's going on?"

John raised an eyebrow curiously and seemingly confused. "What do you mean? I heard y'all found Manny and brought him back for Doc Hellzgood.  But, I dunno who you mean by Sweatpea." He laughs a little with genuine mirth, "Did ol' Manny find himself a gal? Well shoot, good for him.  The doc always did ride him hard, maybe she'll get him away from that old sidewinder. Heck knows he could do better than his old man. But, I dunno how much help you'll be teaching Manny anything. He's got a good heart, but he's not al that trainable. He's a pretty low functioning 2. Lotta brawn, but not much cognitive retention..."

The Scholar, now visibly agitated, begins pacing anxiously.

"Oh, no no no, that's not right. When we left Manny with your people, he was accompanied by a little girl. We found them together, playing in the woods, and Manny rescued her from her abusive parents. It was the guilds hope that they could work together, learn to be a team for your DNR. Even if they don't have the talents to work in the field, they could have been excellent morale boosters, an example of he living and dead co existing peacefully."

Rollo stops, looking the agent dead in the eye, a disturbing intensity from the otherwise cheerful and ebullient scribe.

"If anything happened to that little girl, he is going to snap. Agent Styx, she is his only friend."

John's merry attitude falls away as he listens. "Wait, what...?" He asks taken aback. "Rescued her from her parents...? What were they doing to her?" he asks with a quirked eyebrow.

"Manny is a good enough guy on his own, but at the end of the day he's hired muscle that works for some of the worst sort on Tartarus. He's certainly not suited to take care of a little girl. If you brought them back here then sure as shootin' the first place Manny took her was home to the Doc's place."

He rubs his face in his palms. "Who do you think put out the missing person's bounty? The Doc wanted his work mule back.  Aint the first time Manny's wandered off, ya know.  Good on ya for finding him and bringing him back, but wasn't forseein' a kid at his side like a lost puppy."

He shook his head softly. "It don't sit well."  He sighed and paced a bit.  Then he turned to the Scholar, and asked "Where are her folks now?  They going to come looking for her?  Manny hurt 'em when he 'rescued' her?"

"We were going to leave the girl with her father, her mother being an abusive prostitute, but something happened. I'm not clear on the details, but she was screaming and when my compatriots saw the scene, they stepped out of Manny's way and let him do what he liked. After that we decided he and the DNR were liable to be better guardians."

Rolling begins stroking his beard absently, lost in thought.

"Regardless of his associations, the girl is an innocent. And now, likely, a bargaining chip for this doctor. Do you think he is more liable to use her, or discard her?"

John mulled over what was said. Finally he sighed and turned back. "Not having been there I'm gonna have to trust how your friends handled this. Things don't always go as we had planned." He mussed his hair with one hand. "Wish I had been there on this one. It's going to complicate things. Last thing we need is a murder kidnapping charge to come down." He shook his head, "You sure you didn't see what really happened, and what happened to her mother?"

John paced a bit and pulled out a cigarette striking a match. "I'm not sure she would be a bargaining chip. More likely... we just won't see the girl again." He turned and met the scholar's eyes with melancholy realism.
