TOPIC: The Goldhammer

5 years 3 weeks ago #1549

By now the GOLD  DIAMOND crafter's mark was becoming a fairly common sight on the finest arms and armor around Waypoint, and this was its birthing place:

The Goldhammer

A slightly arrogant dwarf is belittling a customer as you enter. . .
"Xandobar Goldhammer DOES NOT craft 'something cheap!' Move along to some other merchant. You are wasting my time."

With a wave of the hand, the legendary smith dismisses the customer and directs his now friendly attention to you.

"Welcome. Come in. Tell me, what is it that YOU wish to pass on to your grandchild some day?"

A new sign is posted in front of the Goldhammer.

"Now accepting applications for brand representation in the upcoming tournaments. Enjoy the advantage over your opponents that only superior gear can provide.

To protect the brand, only the elite of contestants will be accepted. "

A few men walk by and look around but nothing to be scoffing about. The skinny twosome try to lift a sword with humorous results.

The tent was mostly stripped by now. The wares had long since been moved, with the forge not long behind. It had only been a year since Goldhammer set up shop amongst the merchant district, but his dwarven blood couldn't help but feel a bit sentimental. Gathering the last of his personal affects, the dwarf takes a last look around the tent that started his Waypoint career. He was off to a new home now, a more permanent one. The trade conglomerate, GRANOLA, was founded and from there Goldhammer would be able to operate  at only a fraction of the overhead costs.

"Everything you need to get you through the day. Hmmph!"
With a stoic huff to gather himself once more, the legendary smith leaves his market stall for the last time.

A tall, bald human-looking male walked by the empty stall and remembered back to where a sign once stood.

"Minx?"

"Yeah, Gray?"

"Could I have been an elite contestant?"

"Yeah, Gray."

The armored woman walked on.

"I'm gonna miss that dwarf.  He made good stuff.  Even I couldn't break it, and the Captain says I break everything."

"Yeah, Gray.  You do.

Don't worry.  You'll see him again.

You can't keep a good dwarf down."

. . .

"Really?"

. . .

"Yeah.  I've tried."

2 years had passed since the dwarf had last stepped foot in the Waypoint. The murder, the restoration, the hiding; all that was over now. With open arms, the city of Freedom embraced the Master Smith home.

Home.....

It's funny how this place had taken such a feeling. A land with so few sons of Kyorn seemed an odd place to develop attachment to, but yet the people had embraced Goldhammer as kin.

And then there was the halfling. Had Xandobar lost his mind? Did he really have the patience to teach another apprentice? She was so raw. Never even fashioned a serrated blade. Still, she was eager to learn, and passionate of the art. Her technique, while green, was a solid foundation to build from, and her respect for tradition hinted at a possibility for greatness. Perhaps she could succeed where her predecessor had not. Time will tell.

Enough time had been spent on idle thought, though. The houses have requested a suit for the watchmen, and Goldhammer was certainly going to deliver. Grabbing the heated plate from the coals, the smith begins shaping the contours of a pauldron. The familiar clang of steel on steel rings throughout the town.
